Cynthia Rifi, who supports Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist who has risen to front-runner status in opinion polls, said her decision to take out her 15-year-old riding partner Sebastian came down to her need to care for her Dutch warmblood gelding while still supporting her candidate.

"When I first was thinking about canvassing, my biggest dilemma was, I have to have time to ride my horses, get them exercise, get them out on the trail, how am I going to do both? And then I kind of looked around where I live and I thought, 'Ah hah, I'll canvas on horseback,'" said Rifi, who ironically is allergic to horse hair, hay and sagebrush. REUTERS/Gabriela Bhaskar

When the opportunity came to support Sanders again this election cycle, Rifi didn\u0027t hesitate. She reached out to the Sanders Nevada office and was able to get addresses of prospective voters in her area, where it\u0027s easier to reach many of her neighbors by horseback.

Even though not all of her neighbors support Sanders, she still feels welcome. "It has been such a warm reception, honestly. Even people who aren't Bernie supporters have just been wonderful," she said. "I have to say, that speaks to my community. People are just kind and wonderful. And, you know, even if they maybe not don't necessarily agree with you on all issues, we can all agree that we love our horses and we love where we live. And we really want the best for ourselves, our families, our kids and grandkids." REUTERS/Gabriela Bhaskar
